For which period?

For each improvement, answer YES or NO. If YES, rate it from 0 to 10 three ways: how often you feel it, how strong it is, and how long it lasts.

Measuring Pain or Pleasure Using Frequency, Intensity, and Duration

Three simple questions. Three different scales. One combined score.

  1. Rate each factor from 0 to 10: Frequency (how often do you feel it), Intensity (how strong is it) and Duration (how long does it last).
  2. Combined score: Add your three scores and divide by 3.
  3. Your score (0–10) for that improvement. BEST SCORE for each question is 10.

What does your score mean?

0–1Very lowvery little pain or pleasure

2–3Low

Read Dr. Carlston's guideWhat is Toxic fat?Visceral and subcutaneous fat, why VAT matters, how it is measured and how to reduce it.Open the guide (opens in a new tab; your answers here stay as they are)

Is It Useful To Weigh Yourself?

Weighing yourself is an objective indicator but not the best. It only accounts for how heavy your body is, not how much fat you have on the body. Weight loss on the scale is the same for water, muscle, fat, & bone loss. Weight also fluctuates a minimum of 2-5% during a normal month, so that is 2-5 pounds per 100 pounds.

A Better Indicator of Fat-Loss Is Body Measurements.

Since the body has a selective prioritization process on how it both stores and burns water, muscle & fat, keeping the measurements gives a real indication of how your body is using or burning the stored WAT = White Adipose Tissue, the VAT = Visceral Adipose Tissue, SCAT = Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue, & MAT = Muscle Adipose Tissue – which is all the ugly, unwanted FAT!

Get the Best Measurement of Your Body Composition using Dr Carlston’s Vitality, Longevity, Assessment.

This has a 99% full body (upper, lower, and torso) accurate measurement to know your body’s percent of Fat and of Muscle.

  • Learn what percent of your body is FAT, and the weight in LBS that you are carrying around.
  • Know what percent and weight of your body MUSCLE is. Vital to knowing the depth of your health reserve.
  • Know where the TOXIC FLUID is in your body – is it inside or outside of your cells.
  • Know how healthy your body’s cells are, and the integrity of your cell walls. How healthy are the cells that replace each cell being turned over.

The VAT –

VAT in the context of fat stands for Visceral Adipose Tissue.

What is Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)?

  • Definition: VAT is the deep, intra-abdominal fat that wraps around and between your internal organs, including your liver, pancreas, intestines, and kidneys.
  • Difference from Subcutaneous Fat: While subcutaneous fat sits directly under the skin and is soft and pinchable (like "love handles"), VAT sits deep inside the abdominal cavity behind the muscle wall.
  • Metabolic Activity: VAT is highly active and releases hormones and inflammatory proteins directly into the portal vein and liver.

Why VAT Matters

  • Health Risks: Excess VAT is strongly linked to a higher risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and certain cancers.
  • Measurement: You cannot see or pinch VAT in the mirror. It is typically estimated or measured using clinical tools like a Bioimpedance Fluid Analysis, a DEXA scan, MRI, CT scan, or approximated via waist measurements (such as a waist circumference over 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men).
  • Reduction: VAT responds well to regular aerobic and resistance exercise, a fiber-rich, low-sugar diet, stress management, and adequate sleep.

Visceral fat is easier to lose than the SCAT – Subcutaneous fat because it metabolizes faster and can be excreted through the lungs, sweat, urine, & the bowels. Yet, we also do see this change as well!

The subcutaneous fat (fat layer closest to the skin surface) can be readily shed by stopping drinking the glass of wine or can / bottle of beer after your golf or tennis session.

Know the exact percent of Fat to muscle ratio of your body with a Bioimpedance fluid analysis test called Vitality and Longevity test in our office.
